"How long should I wear my loc style?"
One of the most common questions clients ask. The answer depends on the style, your maintenance routine, and the health of your locs. Wearing styles for the right amount of time protects your roots, prevents thinning, and keeps your locs strong long-term.
Starter Loc Styles
If you’re in the early stages of your loc journey, styles like two-strand twists, coils, or braided starters could be kept in for 2–4 weeks before your first retwist or retightening.
Why only 2-4 weeks?
Starter locs are still forming/ maturing. Leaving styles in too long can cause matting at the root, uneven locking patterns, dents, or weak spots.
Retwist Styles with more matured locs (Barrels, Petals, Rope Twists)
After a retwist, styled looks like barrel twists or rope twists should typically be worn for 1–3 weeks.
Benefits of removing styles on time:
Prevents tension on edges
Reduces breakage, thinning, or loose hairs at the root
Allows scalp access for moisture and air
Can help keep parts neat & help retwists last a little longer
PSA: If your scalp feels tight or sore, that’s your sign to take the style down sooner.
Protective Styles Over Locs (Faux Add-Ons or Extended Styles)
Styles with added hair should generally stay in no longer than 4–6 weeks.
Keeping added hair in too long can:
Cause buildup
Create tension on weaker locs
Lead to thinning or breakage
The Golden Rule for Loc Styles
Healthy locs come first. A style should never be worn longer than your scalp can handle. Even if it still looks good, your roots and loc shafts may need attention.
A good guideline:
2–4 weeks for styled retwists
4–6 weeks maximum for added hair styles
Always, always, always listen to your scalp
Your loc journey is about health and longevity. Removing styles on time ensures your locs stay strong, thick, and thriving for years to come.
