Starting your loc journey can be exciting, nerve racking, confusing, and soooooo much more! A little care goes a long way.
Here are some simple tips to keep your starter locs happy and healthy:
1) Trust the process.
Your locs will look fuzzy, frizzy, and imperfect at first — that’s normal! Avoid over-manipulating them.
2) Keep them clean.
Clean scalp = healthy locs. Use a gentle, residue-free shampoo diluted with water. If conditioner is a necessity, heavily dilute with H20 and make sure to throughly rinse hair. Don't be afraid of water & be gentle.
Mixture ratios (1/2 Shampoo + 1/2 water 1/4 Condition + 3/4 water)
3) Moisture is key.
Light oils or a water-based spray will help keep your locs from feeling dry. Less is more.
4) Protect at night.
Sleep with a satin or silk bonnet, durag, or pillowcase to reduce frizz and breakage.
5) Don’t over-retwist.
Too much retwisting can cause thinning. Stick to a schedule that works for your hair type. Twisting, pulling, or constantly redoing them can slow the locking process. Let it do its thing!
6) Take your styles out.
Yes! Styles manage the amount of manipulation your starter locs may endure, but please, try not to wear styles for too long (2-3 weeks max).
Most importantly, be patient with yourself and your hair. Starter locs are a journey, not a finished look — and they’re going to be beautiful
